July 2026 Update Updates to the Indiana Bottle Collectors website will be temporarily paused during the month of July 2026 as we work behind the scenes on a major reorganization of the site. Over the past several months, it has become clear that maintaining a comprehensive reference covering the entire state of Indiana requires more time than can realistically be dedicated to the project. To allow for more frequent updates and a higher-quality resource, the website will soon shift its primary focus to Northwest Indiana, with special emphasis on Lake, Porter, and LaPorte Counties. The Indiana Hutchinson Bottle and Indiana Embossed Dairy Bottle reference sections will continue to cover the entire state and will remain active and updated for the whole state. However, most other sections outside Northwest Indiana will no longer receive regular updates. Additional information about these changes, including the reasons behind them and what visitors can expect moving forward, will be announced soon. Thank you to everyone who has supported the project by sharing photographs, historical information, and bottle discoveries. Your contributions have helped make this website possible, and we appreciate your continued support as we begin this new chapter.

William F. Weiler

  • County: La Porte County
  • Location: La Porte
  • Years Active in the Business: c. 1886 - 1908

William F. Weiler, who has just completed an elegant two-story brick and stone business building at the corner of Michigan Avenue and Washington Street, which he will occupy as a saloon, was born in Michigan City, April 11, 1858, but has been a resident of LaPorte since 1879. He was educated in the public schools of Michigan City, where he also learned the meat market business. Upon coming to Laporte he formed a partnership with H. Schafering, under the firm name of Schafering & Weiler for three years they conducted a successfully a meat market. In 1882 Mr. Weiler purchased the interest of his partner and continued the business alone for a year, when he disposed of the Market.

In 1886 he engaged in the saloon business at the corner of Washington and Adams Streets and in a short time his place, known as the “Lake Erie Saloon,” became one of the popular establishments in the city. After 18 years there he disposed of the place to Charles Smith and purchased of former Sheriff Bowen the residence at the corner of Main and Jackson Streets, where he now resides with his family. The building which is now being erected by him will be a great improvement to that end of Michigan Avenue and will undoubtedly prosper under Mr. Weiler, for he is a hustler and a man of business ability. He was married in 1880 to Miss Henrietta Saloff and they have four children. – LaPorte Today: Historical, Descriptive, Biographical, Illustrated. (1904).

We could not find an exact death date. A grave marker for W. F. Weiler shows the years 1858–1908 at Pine Lake Cemetery in La Porte. In the 1913 directory, his wife Henrietta is listed as the widow of William F. Weiler.
