Frederick Umlauf was born in April 1857 in Germany. He married Bertha Krueger on January 18, 1885, in La Porte, Indiana. He died at the age of 59 on June 10, 1916.
Mr. Umlauf conducts one of the best known and most popular saloons of our city, which is a popular place of resort patronized by people who like to quench their thirst in a place so attractively filled up as is this one, and smoke the fragrant cigars which he always keep on hand for his many patrons.
He has been established in this business for the past twenty years, in which he is as well and favorably known as any man in his line, and does everything he can to make his place one of the most frequented here, which is certainly is.
He is located at 602 east Michigan street, where about four years ago he began, in addition to his other business, to bottle the celebrated Ph. Zorn Brewing Company’s beers, in which line he does a very large trade among those who like good beer, and believe in patronizing home industry. He is popular personally, and his employees are invariably courteous to all his patrons. – Michigan City Evening News, September 17, 1909.
Prior to 1905, 602 E. Michigan Street had been the address of Casper Kuhn, whose name and the 602 address appear embossed on one of his bottles.
