  • County: La Porte County
  • Location: La Porte
  • Years active: c. 1913 (as Ulm & Bates) — ?

George Fredrich Ulm was born on October 8, 1877, in Seymour, Indiana. He married Rose Schwingendorf on January 16, 1901, in La Porte. He died on February 15, 1952, in La Porte and is buried in Saint Johns Lutheran Cemetery.

George had a partnership with Cuthbert Dean Bates, and together they served as agents for Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer. According to the 1913 city directory, they also operated a saloon at 612 Indiana Avenue. See: C.D. Bates

It is unclear when the Ulm and Bates partnership began or ended, but the only record we located showing them together is the 1913 city directory. In the 1910 directory, Ulm was in a partnership with C. J. Loetz and operated a saloon under the name “Loetz and Ulm” at 612 Indiana Avenue. They were listed as agents for Pabst Brewing Company.

612–614 Indiana Avenue is the two-story building on the far left where Ulm & Bates operated their saloon. It had previously been Charles Loetz’s Sample Room.

The building is no longer standing. The old fire station shown in this photo is still there as of 2025.

This photo was taken on June 23, 1978 and is part of the Michigan City Historical Society collection.
