Based on U.S. Census data and newspaper articles, Stephen Senchak and his wife, Anna, came to Whiting in 1902 to establish their dairy business.
Stephen was born on December 25, 1872, in Czechoslovakia, and died on April 26, 1925. Anna was born on August 24, 1871, also in Czechoslovakia, and died on January 13, 1942. Her obituary headline reads, “WHITING DAIRY FOUNDER DIES.”
The 1923 phone book lists: Senchak, Geo. — dairy, 521 John St., phone Whiting-246-W.
The dairy later operated at 1441 John St.
In 1928, the business was trademarked: “GEORGE and EMIL SENCHAK, doing business under the name and style of the Senchak Dairy Company, hereby give notice that they have adopted the following described trade mark and trade name, which trade mark and trade name is now used and will be used hereafter in marking bottles, boxes and other containers employed in bottling and selling milk, cream and other dairy products.
A circle with the words ‘Senchak Dairy Company’ around the inside top, the capacity of the bottle, as ‘One Quart,’ ‘One Pint,’ in the center of the circle, and ‘Whiting, Indiana,’ around the inside bottom of said circle, and on the opposite side of said bottle, on the shoulder thereof, a small circle with the letter ‘S’ therein.” (The Hammond Times, October 12, 1928.)
There is also a GEO. SENCHAK embossed milk bottle from Whiting.
