“MAYOR TO TRY CASE”

Whiting Saloonkeepers Will be Put on Trial Tomorrow.

Anton Noeller and John Kollar, two Whiting saloonkeepers will be tried before Mayor Smith tomorrow on the charge of having violated the saloon law.

The prosecuting witnesses will be H. D. Muffitt, A. J. Carey and H. C. Furgeson, three men employed by the Standard Oil company, who are very much in evidence in the fight against the saloonkeepers.

The arrests were made last Saturday evening, the violation, however, being alleged to have taken place the Saturday before. It has not yet been decided whether the trial tomorrow will be by jury or not.

Anton Noeller, who also owns a place in Gary, has his Whiting saloon located on New York avenue and John street. While Noeller is the owner, the saloon is in charge of his son-in-law, John Pauly.

John Kollar, proprietor of the Opera House buffet is one of the well known saloonkeepers of Whiting. His place of business is located on John street.

Despite the arrests of Saturday night the saloons were kept open yesterday and it is thought that if the verdict will go against the two saloonkeepers tomorrow that the other cases will be pressed.

Two lives, one in Hammond last night and the second in Whiting this morning were snuffed out owing to accidents. Anton Noeller, 56 years old, saloonkeeper and former councilman in Whiting was blinded by the snowstorm and failed to notice the approach of a Pennsylvania train.

Storm Causes Death.

Noeller’s death is indirectly due to the snow storm which raged this morning. He was on his way to the Lake Shore depot to go to Chicago, and stepped on the Pennsylvania tracks at One Hundred and Nineteenth street without noticing the approach of passenger train No. 5 west bound which is due in Whiting at 7:58.

He was killed instantly, probably without knowing what struck him. The gates are said to have been down with the watchman in a position where he saw the accident. Noeller carried a satchel in one hand and an umbrella in the other. The body was mangled and mutilated, and later identified by Dr. Putnam.

Note the red arrow at the bottom showing where his saloon was located (according to the train accident article mentioning the location of the saloon). Today, the building is no longer standing. As of 2026, the site is an empty parking lot. Google Maps places the location at 1949 New York Ave. It also appears that many street address numbers in Whiting were changed over the years. It is unknown exactly when the building was razed, but according to historical aerial images, a building stood on that corner and was demolished sometime between 1959 and 1964.
