Clemens Garwood Dick was born in 1886. He was the son of August C. Dick and Elizabeth Jane Garwood, the grandson of prominent La Porte brewer Clemens Dick, and the nephew of Albert J. Dick.
The Dick family had a long and well-documented history in the bottling business that spanned several decades.
According to an article in The Michigan City News dated September 25, 1935, Clem. G. Dick entered the bottling business in 1906 when he became owner of the Standard Bottling Works after purchasing it from his uncle, Albert J. Dick. In 1907, Harvey F. Luchtman acquired a one-half interest in the company. The firm continued to operate as the Standard Bottling Works until 1928, when it became the Coca-Cola Bottling Company. The 1934–1935 Michigan City Directory lists Clem. G. Dick as the manager of the Coca-Cola Bottling Works.
It is unclear exactly when the bottles embossed “C. G. Dick Bottling Works” were produced, but they likely date to around 1906–1907, before the Standard Bottling Works bottles. This would explain why bottles bearing the C. G. Dick name are so difficult to find today.
He married Viola May Luchtman on June 10, 1911.
Clemens Garwood Dick died in September 1, 1935 from pneumonia and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Michigan City.
1) Clem G. Dick, age 52 years, president of the Coca Cola Bottling works at Michigan City, died Sunday at his home in Michigan City following an attack of pneumonia. Mr. Dick was well known to Valparaiso university student body, having appeared before them on several occasions to explain his plan for alleviation of the depression. At one time he had a personal audience with President Roosevelt regarding the plan, and it is said that many of the New Deal policies can be traced to his ideas.
